The Circle of Love Hadith
“Make constant dua’a and supplication to your Lord after every act of obedience, asking Him to help you in devotion, because it is only through His generosity that you are able to worship”.[1]The Prophet said to Muadh ibn Jabal: “I love you! So never leave this dua after every prayer: Oh Allah help me in remembering You, in offering gratitude to You, and in worshiping You beautifully.” This became known as the Circle of Love hadith, as when Muadh taught the dua to others he first said “I love you! So do not leave saying…” and they would tell those who came after them, “We love you! So do not leave saying this dua…”
Love of Allah
Another beautiful dua’a the Prophet (s) would often make was one he narrated the prophet Dawud (as) would also recite:
Allahumma inni asaluka hubaka,
Wa hubbaman ya hibuka,
Wal amal al-ladhi bel leghuni hubbaka,
Allahumma ja’al hubbaka a-habba alay-yai,
Min nafsi, wa-ahli,wa minal barrid.
O Allah I ask You for Your Love,
And the love of those whom You Love,
And the actions that will cause me to attain unto Your Love,
O Allah make Your love more beloved,
to me than myself, my family and even from cold water. (At-Tirmidhi)
The first of these dua’a represent our attainment of the understanding that in reality every goodness possessed is a blessing from Allah for which we show our gratitude to Allah. Gratitude maintains those blessings on right course and brings increased blessings to the suppliant by the will of Allah. Furthermore through constantly remembering Allah, through constantly showing gratitude to Allah leads to the perfection of worship by which, as the dua’a mentions, we hope to worship Allah beautifully. Beautiful worship necessitates a beautiful heart free from anything else but the remembrance of Allah.
Thus, the means of attaining such a beautiful heart is to seek to attain a heart which is filled with Love of Allah. A heart preoccupied with His remembrance, occupied with His gratitude, is a heart that attains unto His love. And any heart filled with His love naturally inclines towards beauty for as the Prophet (s) said, ‘Allah is beautiful and loves beauty’. Thus it is, that to a heart filled with His love, does Allah appear to such hearts as beautiful – beauty necessitates beauty, manifesting in beautiful sight and hearing. And who, possessing beautiful sight, hearing and heart can but fail to percieve the beauty of Allah. Recite these dua’a frequently and with sincerity and you will see their effects permeate your being until you only love the One worthy of all love.
